Shingles or Metal?
Let’s Find the Right Roof for Your Home.

One of the most common things we hear from homeowners is:

“I want metal because I never want to replace my roof again.”

We understand why. Metal roofing has earned a reputation for durability and longevity. When the right metal roofing system is installed correctly, it can provide exceptional performance for decades.

But there’s something homeowners deserve to know:

Not all metal roofs are the same, and simply choosing metal doesn’t guarantee a lifetime roof.

At Appalachian Roofing Co., our job isn’t to sell you the most expensive roof.

Our job is to explain the differences, help you understand the advantages and tradeoffs of each roofing system, and recommend the solution that makes the most sense for your home, your budget, and your goals.

Sometimes that’s architectural shingles. Sometimes it’s exposed-fastener metal. Sometimes it’s Standing Seam.

Our job isn’t to sell you more roof. It’s to help you buy the right roof.

Architectural Shingles

Modern architectural shingles can be an outstanding roofing solution.

They’re attractive, proven, available in a wide range of styles and colors, and can provide excellent protection when installed as a complete roofing system according to manufacturer requirements.

They also offer a compelling balance of:

Upfront cost. Performance. Warranty protection. Repairability. Appearance. Long-term value.

For many homes, a properly installed architectural shingle system may make more financial sense than moving into a substantially more expensive metal roofing system.

And we’re comfortable telling you that, even when the metal roof would mean a larger contract for us.

Understanding Metal Roofing

When someone says “metal roof,” they may actually be talking about two very different roofing systems.

Exposed fasteners

Fastener passes through the panel face.

Concealed fasteners

Primary fastening is protected beneath the seam.

Simplified cross-sections, not installation details. Standing Seam attachment methods vary; some trim and flashing details may use exposed fasteners.

Exposed-Fastener Metal

Exposed-fastener metal uses screws installed through the face of the metal panels to secure them to the roof. The fastener heads remain visible on the panel surface, which is where the name comes from. Washer protection depends on the fastener design.

It’s a proven and cost-effective metal roofing system, and when properly installed, it can provide years of reliable service.

But it isn’t maintenance-free, and it isn’t automatically a “lifetime roof.”

Metal Moves.

Metal expands when it gets hot and contracts when it gets cold.

As the roof repeatedly moves through temperature changes, the fasteners and sealing points of an exposed-fastener system can experience stress over time.

Fasteners can loosen or back out. Sealing washers can deteriorate or become compromised. Installation matters tremendously.

A screw driven too tightly can damage the washer. Too loose, and it may not seal properly. Driven incorrectly, and it may create a potential point of water intrusion.

And a metal roof is much more than panels and screws.

Flashing, closures, sealants, penetrations, transitions, trim, ventilation, and manufacturer-specified accessories all play a role in how that roof performs.

The material can be excellent and the roof can still fail if the system isn’t installed correctly.

Standing Seam Metal

Standing Seam is a different type of metal roofing system.

Rather than relying on exposed screws through the face of the panels, Standing Seam systems use concealed fastening methods beneath the metal.

The primary fastening system is protected from direct exposure to the weather, and properly designed systems allow the panels to accommodate the natural expansion and contraction of the metal.

That can provide significant advantages in longevity and long-term maintenance.

But there’s a tradeoff.

Standing Seam costs considerably more.

For some homeowners, that additional investment makes perfect sense.

For others, it doesn’t.

Neither answer is wrong.

One standard across every option

Every option starts
with suitable support.

The roof deck and supporting surfaces must suit the selected roofing system. Good, Better, and Best all start with that same requirement.

If removal reveals unsuitable decking, we’ll document the condition, explain the necessary correction, and follow the agreed proposal or approved change-order process. Necessary substrate correction is not a premium-package upgrade.

What happens beneath the roof

Good. Better. Best.

We don’t believe homeowners should be handed one roofing option and one price.

Whether you choose architectural shingles or metal roofing, Appalachian Roofing Co. can present Good, Better and Best solutions within that roofing category.

And we’ll explain what actually changes between them.

Materials. Components. Installation details. Warranty protection. Expected performance. Long-term value.

Within your roofing category

Good

Better

Good Doesn’t Mean Cheap.

This matters to us.

Every roofing system Appalachian Roofing Co. offers has to meet our minimum standard.

Good does not mean cutting corners.

It does not mean removing components your roof needs, using improper accessories, compromising installation quality, or finding cheaper ways to perform work that should be done correctly.

Good means a complete, properly designed and properly installed roofing system at the most accessible price point we’re comfortable putting our name on.

Better and Best provide meaningful upgrades.

They don’t correct deficiencies in Good.

Choose the roof that fits your home.

We’ll help you compare Asphalt Shingles, Tuff Rib metal, and Standing Seam metal based on your home, budget, appearance, and maintenance priorities. Every option starts with a complete roofing system installed correctly. Upgrades should offer a clear benefit for your project.

We offer metal roofing from True Metal Supply, including Tuff Rib and Standing Seam metal.
